Finland and India are not that far away neighbors! The convenient direct flight from Helsinki to New Delhi only takes about six hours. Indeed, the diverse interaction between the two countries has increased.
We here at the Embassy do our best to enhance cooperation, trade and economic ties between Finland and India. We also follow India’s vibrant domestic policy, its awe-inspiring development as well as foreign and security policy. We strive to see behind the obvious in order to better understand what is happening. We cannot, however, predict the future.
Finland has a good reputation in India – we are a country of quality, purity and clarity – but even a top-notch reputation will not last without proper care. Hence we try to make ourselves seen and heard in India! At the Embassy we are also in charge of immigration, visa and consular issues. There is no shortage of Indian travelers and business representatives going to Finland. This is excellent news!
Our Embassy is of “medium size” on the Finnish Foreign Ministry’s scale, meaning a personnel consisting of about 30 Finnish and Indian officials. We have a wonderful personnel! Some of the Indian officials are of third generation, which might be a new record. Finland also has four Honorary Consuls in India, located in the metropolises of Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Bangalore. The Honorary Consuls are an irreplaceable resource for the Embassy.
The compound of the Embassy of Finland is located in the green neighborhood of Chanakyapuri. All buildings in the compound were designed by Finnish architects Raili and Reima Pietilä, and were taken in use in the mid-1980’s. In summer 2016 we started a massive renovation project which will last approximately one and a half years. Our objective is to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Finnish Independence in the elegant settings created by the Pietiläs. By the end of the renovations works the structures of the buildings will hide the newest and most efficient Finnish technology available.
I am happy to serve as the Ambassador of Finland in India and represent Finland in a vibrant, forward looking country.
